A hidden, or concealed, barrel hinge is an outstanding choice for attaching lids to boxes. When the box is closed, the hinge is completely invisible from either side. UV exposure – Polypropylene like most plastics will degrade with UV/sunlight exposure. If you have UV exposure requirements it is highly recommended to add UV additives or a UV protective coating. Prolonged UV exposure tends to create fractures in plastic which will affect the longevity of a living hinge. Limited material selection – The best material for a living hinge is Polypropylene PP.

Butterfly living hinge design for FFF materials and processes follows the same design principles as injection molding with the exception of hinge thickness and length. Also notice how the hinge may be printed without having to account for any negative spaces in the design. Most likely the butterfly hinge is the easiest hinge to print in the FFF process. A living hinge or flexible hinge is a thin and flexible material used as a connector between an item’s larger and rigid plastic sections. A free-fit hinge has little to no friction or drag when the latch or handle rotates. The simplest function of a free-swinging hinge is to mount the hinge pivot externally, on the outside of a door or panel. This prevents the door from conflicting with the frame when opening or closing. Mounting the hinge externally helps to maximize the available space inside the enclosure as well.
It is common to make a few changes to the mold after testing the first parts and with small tweaks the design is normally honed in to a functional hinge. With injection molding, the main design focus is on the hinge’s thickness, recessed flat sections and radii. In 3D printing, an additional design element are the radial connections. In other words, radial connections between the hinge and rigid sections as well as the radii around the bend are of utmost importance. If these elements are properly addressed, the resulting part will be an effective utilitarian component of your product. In traditional 3D printing applications, the source material of ABS or PLA were not good choices for printing living hinges. ABS and PLA do not exhibit the necessary properties for function and sustainability.
